FAQ

Q: Why did Wilma Woolf choose the form of a “Temple” for this project?

A: Inspired by the architectural metaphor used in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the

temple represents a sacred, protected space upheld by pillars (rights). The Temple of Safety

symbolises a safe haven within relationships where fundamental human rights are respected and

preserved.

Q: What is coercive control?

A: Coercive control is a pattern of behaviour in a relationship where one person uses threats,

intimidation, manipulation, or isolation to dominate and restrict their partner’s freedom and

autonomy. It often includes emotional abuse, financial control, and other non-physical tactics that undermine a person’s safety and self-worth. It is often subtle, confusing and sometimes hard to

identify

Q: How can I use the Temple of Safety articles if I’m experiencing abuse

A: These articles outline fundamental rights that every person should have within a relationship. You can use them to identify when your rights are being violated, to seek support from trusted people, organisations, or as a foundation when speaking with professionals like counsellors.

Q: What should I do if I recognise signs of abuse in my relationship?

A: First, ensure your immediate safety. Reach out to trusted friends, family, or professional

support services. Remember, abuse is not your fault, and help is available. The Temple of Safety articles can help you understand your rights and empower your next step
